Steroids Archives

Talk about two people who won’t go away. In 2011 Lance Armstrong “retired” from cycling (for the second time) and Oprah finally retired from her syndicated television show.  Flash forward to the beginning of 2013 and HERE THEY BOTH ARE AGAIN as Oprah is set to interview Lance Armstrong about the doping scandal which has stripped him of seven Tour de France titles and whatever else she wants to ask him because she is Oprah and ain’t nobody sayin’ no to the Oprah.  Ask Stedman.  That guy knows where his bread is buttered.

Anyway, the interview is set to broadcast on Oprah’s OWN channel on January 17th starting at 9pm, so, if you wanna watch, better set those DVRs if you can find that channel.  If I know anything about the people that still read this sports blog, I’m assuming that you’ve all got that channel in your favorites anyway so you should be allllllll set.

Me, I think my feelings can best be summed up with this

Dismissive_Wank

What I’m guessing we’ll see is Oprah “breaking” Lance down a few times, making old one nut cry a bit and finally getting some sort of half confession-half justification out of  him.  Either that or he’ll attempt to stick to his story like Rafael Palmeiro attempted to do in front of Congress which would be HILARIOUS television.

I guess I mistakenly thought that once Oprah retired celebrities wouldn’t have an outlet to “bare their souls”, confess and get back into the good graces of the public they so desperately crave attention and validation from (besides Saturday Night Live i guess, but Lance already shot that wad in 2005 and with DISASTROUS results)?  It sucks that Oprah has given Lance this hailmary chance at redemption because, quite honestly, he doesn’t really deserve it.  The dude lied to everyone and their mothers, probably his own mother, about doping for decades.

Lance should just go away and Oprah should go away as well so that she can’t keep orchestrating public redemption for horrible people just for ratings on her flagging network.

So…Should Barry Bonds Do This Now?

If you somehow missed it, yesterday, former Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals’ slugger Mark McGwire announced that he used steroids off and on for 10 of years of his playing career. Interestingly enough, from my perspective, most of the press on McGwire coming out and admitting his steroid use seems to be leaning slightly on the positive side while mostly settling down in the “ho-hum, no duh, who cares” category of news. I couldn’t help but think that since there has been such little backlash for McGwire coming out of the steroids closet now might just be the time for Barry Bonds to do so as well?

Perhaps since everyone’s mind was already made up long ago that McGwire did use steroids, no one feels the need to demonizing the guy anymore for what he did. It seems to be almost humorous to most that he is finally coming out to admit his transgressions now and that is a lot better than what many other steroids abusers have had happen to them. Have times changed so much so quickly? Could we be entering the steroids amnesty phase of media reporting?
Sure, if Bonds admits steroid use tomorrow there will be the inevitable “Well he only did it because McGwire did it” story-lines but even that is better than the venom that was spewed in the early days of steroid outtings. Now, in the TMZSports world of Tiger Woods head bashing/car trashing/ho’ lashin antics and Gilbert “gun’s ablazin’” Arenas buffonery, the public and the media that feeds it doesn’t seem to be too interested in this old and relatively tame story of athletes juicing.
If there ever was a time for Barry Bonds or anyone to come out and admit steroid use, now appears to be the time to do it. Get in while the gettin’s good guys.

How Do You Spell Hypocrite, Kids?

It’s great to see baseball players giving back to the community especially when they can be hypocritical about their own actions. A-Rod took some time off before his error filled night on Tuesday to address students at Milford Mill Academy in Baltimore County about the dangers of sterioids.

“I am here today simply because I made a mistake,” Rodriguez said, according to a transcript provided by Powered By Me! “Now, how many of you here have made a mistake? Well, I’m here because I made a mistake, and one of my missions in life is to turn a negative into a positive.

“And to actually tell the truth, it feels pretty darn good and liberating. It is very important to me professionally and spiritually. At the end of the day when we look into the mirror, we learn from our mistakes, it’s something we should feel proud of and become a better version of ourselves.”

Let’s take a quick look at how taking steroids has been a negative for A-Rod. Thanks to performance enhancing drugs, he has a multi-million dollar contract, dates actresses and singers and suffered no long-term consequences besides the initial public furor and a book by Selena Roberts. Yeah kids, steroids make your life miserable.

It’s probably a good thing that A-Rod is out there talking to kids about the dangers of using steroids but it’s difficult to see him being an effective messenger when he suffered no serious consequences and didn’t admit using PEDs until he was called out. To his credit, he is working with the Taylor Hooton Foundation and talking to select groups of students around the country on a regular basis. That’s more than the majority of named players have done to prevent the use of PEDs by student-athletes.

Hacking David Ortiz’ Email

The guys at Maxim.com created a nifty graphic of what it “Big Papi” David Ortiz’ email inbox would possibly look like right now. I love the Amazon order of Tom Emanski’s book. Classic.

From Maxim.com

Jeff Fisher is hosting a benefit roast on June 15. Concussion specialists Merrill Hoge and Frank Wycheck are among the expected guests who will roast the Titans head coach. Oh sweet baby, this could turn out great.

Hoge will probably start out roasting Fisher before quickly segueing into ordering a Moons Over My Hammy and “General Toe’s” chicken before turning his full attention to Vince Young and ranting about how he could be the worst player in the history of any sport with a ball. Wycheck will fly into roid rage and threaten to body slam everyone in the room before tearing up and admitting that the steroids made him less of a man than Jose Canseco or Chastity Bono. He’ll order a #56 with extra MSG. Nom nom nom. Vince Young will just take off his shirt and cry while gnawing chicken wings. An enchanted evening for charity indeed.
