How has no one thought of this before? In Japan, of all places, a sport called Yukigassen (Snow Battle) started 20 years ago and is only now starting to spread around the globe. Canada, Alaska and other snowy destinations are all starting to get on board and the game does sound pretty fun. As a matter of fact, the US Yukigassen Championship takes place today. In short, here’s what Yukigassen is all about.

Competitive snowball fighting is essentially dodgeball mixed with capture the flag. Two teams face each other and get a set amount of pre-made snowballs to fight with (somewhere around 90 snowballs). If you get hit with a snowball, you’re out, if your flag gets captured or all of your players get hit by snowballs, you lose. This…is…YUKIGASSEN!!!!!!!!!

There is already a Yukigassen USA league, as well as Yukigassen Canada, and one has to believe this will be all over ESPN 12 or Versus sooner rather than later.

Wanna see how it works?  Check out this video from the Swedish Yukigassen Championships in 2010.  It might be the most intense snowball fight championships video you’ve seen this week.
